Glossary

Cage Biker slang for an enclosed vehicle such as a car or pickup

Close Up Reduce the gap between you and the motorcycle in front of you therefore eliminating the danger of cars moving into the procession.

Crossing Wheels When riding in staggered formation, crossing wheels means that the front wheel of your motorcycle is even with or ahead of the rear wheel on the motorcycle just in front of you and in the other side of the lane.

Drag Man The person who is always last in a pack and secures the lane for lane changes and observes the group from the rear of the pack. The Drag Man is under direct authority of the Road Captain.

Formation The order of placement of motorcycles in a group ride is a formation of motorcycles. The Road Captain will specify what formation the ride will be ridden.

Gap The space between you and the motorcycle in front is what is know as a gap. The Road Captain may give the signal to close up the gap or spread out the gap.

Group Ride An organized ride consisting of 3 or more motorcycles under the charge of a Road Captain and tailed by a Drag Man.

Hand Signals Signals given by the Road Captain to indicate to the group what he wants them to do. The Road Captain's signals are relayed by each member in the ride letting the riders behind them know what the Road Captain is saying to the group.

Mid-Line Relay A Mid-Line Relay is a rider that is strategically placed in the pack where there are a large number of riders. When the Road Captain signals a lane change the drag man is to secure the lane for the group. Mid-line relays will pull into the lane so that the drag man will know that the Road Captain is intending to change lanes and wants the lane secured. Mid-Line Relays are used in very large groups of 40 or more riders.

Pack Just as wolves travel in groups called a pack, a large group of motorcycle riders moving down the highway is known as a Motorcycle Pack

Passenger Any person on the back of a motorcycle should be referred to as a passenger rather than by some of the slang titles that have been used in the past by different groups.

Post Ride Meeting A meeting held by the Road Captain to inform members of the group of any problems he may have observed during the ride. This meeting also serves to let members know of activities after the official ride.

Pre Ride Meeting The Road Captain will hold a pre ride meeting to explain the where the group is riding, what the route will be, known hazards along the route, and where the rest stops will be. Usually the Chaplain will say a prayer, for those who wish to participate, asking that the ride be safe.

Relay The act of every member in the pack duplicating the signs made by the Road Captain. In a large pack it is impossible for everyone to see what the Road Captain's signs are, so it is the responsibility of all riders to relay the signs back to the other riders.

Rider The driver or person in control of the motorcycle. The rider is not the person on the back of the motorcycle, even though he or she is in fact riding.

Road Captain The Road Captain is completely in charge of everything and everyone riding in the group ride. Even the President of the chapter follows direction from the Road Captain. Always follow the Road Captain even if you realize he is going the wrong way. You can get the Road Captain's attention by honking your horn and then let him know he has made a wrong turn. By observing this rule everyone stays together and it is easier to get back on the right track.

Road Guard The Road Guard also known as an Out Rider, is responsible for holding traffic at intersections in situations where the Road Captain has received prior approval by the local Law Enforcement Agency.

Road Team The Road Team is made up of all members appointed by the Road Captain to assist him in conducting the ride. This team includes but is not limited to road guards, drag men, mid relay riders, and Sgt at Arms.

  Scoot Biker Slang for Motorcycle.

Sergeant At Arms The Sergeant At Arms carries out the orders of the Road Captain and provides security for the ride. In a situation where a rider is asked not to ride with the group for unsafe practices or being intoxicated, it is the responsibility of the Sgt. At Arms to enforce the Road Captain's decision to expel the rider from the pack.

Single File The Road Captain will hold up hand extending his index finger straight up to indicate a bad road, construction area, or a hazard ahead. This sign is his indication he wants all riders to move to a single file formation one behind the other and directly behind the Road Captain.

Staggered The usual riding formation used in most cases by American Cruisers Alliance. This formation provides for safe following distance and allows the rider to swerve if needed to avoid obstacles.

Two by Two Two by Two, Wheel to Wheel, Parade Formation are terms used when the riders are riding side by side in the same lane. This formation should never be used in a group ride except when in a parade or at the Road Captain's order and then never at a speed greater than 25 MPH.
