Mid Line Relay Riders

Mid Line Relay Riders are used in groups of 30 or more by some groups or organizers. In such large groups it takes too long for the signals to get back to the Drag man in time to react. By placing Mid Line Relays on each side of the pack every 30 riders this makes it easier for the signal to get back to the rear of the pack.

When the Road Captain gives a hand signal to change lanes, the Mid Line relay on the side next to the lane that the group will be changing to, will check traffic from behind him and move over into that lane and give the same signal that the Road Captain gives. The next Mid Line relay will do the same until the signal reaches the Drag Man and he will move to that lane and secure it so that the riders can change lanes from the back to the front. "The riders in front of and behind the Mid Line Relay Riders should leave his gap open so that he can return to it when he has executed his relay".

It has been found that in groups over 10 or 15 people it is safest to change lanes from the back to the front. Once the Drag Man secures the lane the first two riders in front of him will merge into the desired lane. After they have executed their lane change the next two and so on. The mid line relays will merge back into the group after the Drag Man secures the lane and the riders start their merge. The Mid Line Relays will remain in formation in the group until it is their turn to merge lanes with his co rider beside him.

Groups of 30 or more are the only time Mid Line Relays are typically used, and their only function is to relay lane changes back to the Drag Man. Mid Line Relays should never merge into the designated lane if there is a vehicle between him and the drag man. He should maintain his place in line and relay signal to the driver behind him until the lane is clear between him and the Drag Man. The whole idea of securing the lane is so that there are no vehicles in the lane to worry about while trying to merge into the new lane.

In groups of 15 or less Mid Line Relays are not necessary and it is OK to merge as a group if the Road Captain give the signal to do so. The different lane change signals will be covered later in the workshop.
